Album Review

As a recording of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf doing operetta, and part of the series of Strauss works that she cut with Ackermann and Karajan, this single-CD is of considerable historical interest. On the other hand, the 1954 sound, despite its richness, is somewhat compressed, and the Philharmonia Orchestra is a little too restrained in its approach to these melodies and waltzes, treating them like absolute music, and so this disc may disappoint those seeking the richness of Strauss' music in all of its glory.
