Album Review

This second volume of the Farm & Funtime Favorites series differs from the first in that Leslie Keith, one-time fiddler for the Stanley Brothers, appears on eight of the 22 tracks. The program, however, features a similar mix of sentimental songs, sacred and novelty material, including a nice version of "Nine Pound Hammer." Until the Blue Sky Boys' '40s recordings for Victor/Bluebird become available, the Farm & Funtime and On Radio series provide a fascinating glimpse of this duo at their peak.

In the '30s, brother duets were common in country music: Among the better known were the Monroes, the Delmores, the Dixons, and the Carlisles. Bill and Earl Bolick, who in 1936 were ready to make their first recording, followed their producer's suggestion that they should be different by avoiding the word "brother."
