The four-song Old Material, New Format compiles the contents of Dianogah's earliest singles, originally recorded for the Actionboy 300 label in 1995. Although the material lacks the craft and dexterity of their subsequent work, it possesses an intricacy which belies the band's embryonic state, and their distinctive approach (just two basses and drums) gives their music a sound and texture all its own.

Named after a garbage-loving monster from the original Star Wars film, Chicago's post-rock unit Dianogah comprised bassists Jay Ryan and Jason Harvey in tandem with drummer Kip McCabe. The group debuted in 1995 with the single "100% Tree," followed early the next year by "Garden Airplane Trap"; these two 7"s were subsequently collected as the EP Old Material, New Format.
