Album Review

This third Will Bradley CD released by the Scottish Hep label has 18 of his orchestra's final 36 recordings (including "In the Hall of the Mountain King," "From the Land of Sky Blue Waters," and small group jams on "Basin Street Boogie" and "Tea for Two"). Along the way, such soloists are heard from as Peanuts Hucko on tenor, pianists Freddie Slack and Billy Maxted, trumpeter Lee Castle, and Bradley on trombone. However, Bradley got tired of the many big band boogie-woogie numbers (he preferred playing ballads) and co-leader drummer/singer Ray McKinley and he split up in early 1942. Their subsequent orchestras did not record. Bradley eventually returned to the studios. This disc concludes with seven numbers that the trombonist recorded during 1946-1947 with fellow studio musicians, including a remake of "Celery Stalks" and the intriguing "Bop 'N' Boogie." But there was no great demand for a new Will Bradley Orchestra, and that venture never got off the ground. However, there are many enjoyable swing performances on this CD, which (along with the two other Bradley Hep discs) is recommended to swing fans.
