Album Review

With her third album, 2012's Glassheart, Leona Lewis certainly intends to take risks she studiously avoided on her previous outing, Echo. Ryan Tedder, author and producer of her galvanizing 2007 single "Bleeding Love," is back on board, but overall there's a distinct shift toward dance, and Lewis even flirts with dubstep on occasion. Tedder's chilly love songs are a good match for this change of direction, but Lewis hasn't changed much despite the electronic window dressing: she's still singing skyscraping pop designed to showcase her diva range. There are more interesting textures and rhythms and Lewis navigates the sometimes elliptical contours of the melodies with ease, but Glassheart remains a sonic monument to marvel at, not a piece of art that's asking for your engagement.
