Lori Carson moved from NYC to the bucolic environs of Long Island’s North Fork to immerse herself in an artistic notion that within the slowing rhythms of nature she could find the soothing balm to her often-chaotic emotional needs. Her solo career — she has also performed with the Golden Palominos — has been an unflinching analysis of her personal and romantic life, and with House In the Weeds she cuts past nearly every artistic artifice to deliver the truth as it ever changes before her eyes. Happiness is temporary, restlessness is permanent. These are home demos, recorded with little finesse, proud of their imperfections and enriched by their unvarnished character. Just as the title suggests these are songs that engage emotions often left unattended. “Part Missing,” “Wonderful Too,” “Your Side” all whisper in quiet desperation, longing to connect with the outer world, but suspicious as to what awaits. Carson layers her vocals in dreamy harmony and steps quietly, clearly belonging in the line of company of other heralded songwriters from Tori Amos to Elliot Smith.
