There’s sweeping musical range on Mighty Like a Rose—guitars sparkle and ache, keyboards and horns thicken things and Costello tackles complex themes such as detachment and sour nostalgia with jaw-dropping narrative grace. Many moments stun: The brass-enhanced “Sweet Pear” revels in Costello’s perverse sense of busted love while the rising, piano-stoked “How to Be Dumb” reveals his colourful vitriol. The psychedelic sunshine pop of “The Other Side of Summer” and “Harpies Bizarre” tingles, the gentle “After the Fall” stings and the derisive “Playboy to a Man” lays out danceable chaos.
