Devotion - The Gold Edition

Devotion - The Gold Edition

Having started her music career as a backing vocalist—initially with her schoolfriend Jack Peñate—south London’s Jessie Ware makes for centre-stage on this poised, seductive debut. And though music was a second career (Ware worked briefly as a journalist and behind the scenes at a TV production company), Devotion feels like a far from tentative step into the spotlight. It is, instead, a deeply sophisticated, soft-lit swirl of ‘80s-influenced R&B which takes in huge, dry ice-fogged torch songs (“Wildest Moments”), sultry, synth-cloaked doo-wop (“Sweet Talk”) and elastic, rap sampling vocal garage (“If You’re Never Gonna Move”). But “Running” may be the crowning example of her gifts: a sumptuous, heady epic of squelching keys, electric guitar and the controlled explosion of Ware’s smoky delivery.
