This Perfect Day's debut album, Rubber Soul, may not share much with the Beatles' masterpiece of the same name, but it is nevertheless an appealing pop collection. The Swedish group builds from the melodic innocence of early Beatles and the jangling alt-pop of the '80s, tempering it all with a slight suggestion of new wave and punk-pop. Lyrically, the group's a little lightweight, but they have a stronger sense of songcraft than many of their Swede-pop peers, and that's the reason why Rubber Soul is such a charming, winning debut.

Along with Eggstone and the Wannadies, This Perfect Day made a name for itself as part of the top echelon of the late-'90s Swedish alternative guitar-pop scene. The quintet originally consisted of high school friends Mats Eriksson (vocals), Ove Markstrom (guitar), Richard Johansson (guitar), Peter Fahlgren (bass), and Ralph Tjarnlund (drums), all from the northern Swedish town of Skelleftea.
