Play the Blues is Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton’s tribute to the sounds of early 20th-century America. Since both artists are learned sophisticates with a deep love for the material, their performance is as educational as it is celebratory. The rapt audience is treated to a variety of styles, including Chicago blues (“Forty-Four”), spirituals (“Just a Closer Walk With Thee”) and ragtime (“Ice Cream”). Clapton and Marsalis also throw down a wild card when they transform classic rock staple “Layla” into a brassy, New Orleans-style dirge.
