Camera Obscura's "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" is indie pop at its very best. A soaring melody, a huge hook, lilting strings, and Tracyanne Campbell's drop-deadpan vocals add up to make it pure genius that will spin your brain into a big wad of cotton candy. That's a good thing, and so is the three-song EP the song headlines. (It can also be found on the brilliant Let's Get Out of This Country LP.) The other two songs are fine examples of the same qualities that make "Lloyd" so good, and either would have fit right in on the album — "Roman Holiday" especially. The EP also includes the video for "I Love My Jean."

The Scottish ensemble Camera Obscura formed in 1996, when vocalist Tracyanne Campbell, percussionist John Henderson, bassist Gavin Dunbar, and guitarist David Skirving began creating lush indie pop with orchestral flourishes and romantic lyrics. They went on to release a number of singles, one of which included contributions from Belle & Sebastian's Richard Colburn, whose band served as a stylistic touchstone for the young Camera Obscura.
