Album Review

The second album from the band Pato Fu, which sold 50,000 copies. From Minas Gerais, they have a pop/rock style strongly influenced by Os Mutantes. They perform mostly originals fusing different rhythms over a foundation of humor. Redneck music, rock ("Vida Imbecil" is shamelessly based on "2001" by Tom Zé/Rita Lee, recorded as a redneck rock in 1968 by Os Mutantes), pop (the hit "Sobre o Tempo"), seresta (the electronic rendition for the old seresta classic "A Volta do Boêmio"), and Beatlemania ("Qualquer Bobagem" has references to Sgt. Pepper's, "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" is delivered in a tempo three times faster than in the original version), everything in a package replete with drum machines and other heavy electronics. The trio was formed by guitarist John (former member of the defunct band Sexo Explícito), vocalist Fernanda Takai, and bassist Ricardo Koctus.

Pato Fu is heavily influenced by Os Mutantes in its formation (two men and a woman), in the choice of timbres, and in the use of humor and satire, which includes São Paulo's redneck accent. So far they've put out five albums, enjoyed national exposure since 1995, when, because of their album Gol de Quem?, the band was one of the most played on radios and presented in TV shows, along with tours throughout Brazil.
