Album Review

Quint Black got his big break through Too $hort, the all-time king of rhymes about pimping, which makes Black's musical background in gospel rather amusing in this context. Too $hort makes a guest appearance on Black's debut disc, Dirty Rice, which mixes gospel-influenced soul and R&B sounds (although definitely not subject matter) with typical Southern rap grooves and well-done production touches. The subject matter is nothing all that different from legions of other late-'90s rap releases, but Black's rhyming is competent, and there's no reason this shouldn't appeal to fans of that now-standard hip-hop fare, even if the philosophizing sometimes seems knee-jerk and poorly thought through.
