Album Review

Good to see that David Steinhart is still going. This is actually L.A.'s Smart Brown Handbag's fourth LP, in their fifth year of existence, and I didn't even know he had a newer band! (Tells you about the flow of info these days from Coast to Coast.) But I remember his older Pop Art, who made a number of fine LPs in the late '80s, and Smart Brown Handbag is a refinement of the guitarist/singer/songwriter's former ideas. Songs such as the sublime "Ungrateful After All" (which namechecks Del Amitri) show off his gifts for super-clean ringing pop with strong-voiced singing that would be as at home on a Squeeze or Lucy Show LP as it is on this well-crafted, pop. In some ways, the trio is a throwback to that brief moment around the time Pop Art formed, when a lot of people threw out their distortion pedals or barely used them, and yet played really edgy, aggressive guitar-rock that was more about the melodies than the minor-crunch and Beatlesisms of power-pop. Very, very good.
