About Jane Coop

Jane Coop is a Canadian pianist and educator. As a child living in Calgary, she studied piano with Alexandra Munn and Gladys Egbert. She attended the University of Toronto, where she studied for four years with Anton Kuerti, and she earned her bachelor's degree in 1972. From 1972 to 1973, a scholarship allowed her to study with Peter Feuchtwanger in London. She pursued graduate studies at the Peabody Conservatory, where her teacher was Leon Fleisher, and in 1974 she earned her master's degree in piano performance. Continuing her work with Fleisher through 1976, Coop won the Washington International Piano Competition, took a prize at the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, and was a finalist at the Munich International Piano Competition in 1977. She has performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Coop's professional career has taken her to Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Beijing Concert Hall, and the Bolshoi Hall in St. Petersburg, among many other concert halls. From 1980 to 2012, Coop was a member of the faculty at the University of British Columbia's School of Music. She was honored as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2012. ~ Blair Sanderson
