On Los Lobos’ ragged, rollicking Kiko, the Chicano musicians showcase the many sides of roots rock and how Americana and Tex-Mex fusions coalesce. On one hand, they master heartfelt boleros with poetic poignancy, such as the banjo arpeggio-decorated “Two Janes” and the dusty, countrified “When the Circus Comes”. And on the other, they get down ‘n’ dirty with good-time debauchery, as on the blues-soaked “Whiskey Trail”.
