Album Review

Rising trumpeter/flügelhornist Fabrizio Bosso meets veteran tenor saxophonist Gianni Basso for this solid studio recording that focuses mostly on standards from the Great American Songbook. With pianist Andrea Pozza, bassist Luciano Milanese, and drummer Stefano Bagnoli providing terrific support, the session opens with an extended treatment of "What Is This Thing Called Love?" that cooks, followed by a soothing midtempo setting of "Witchcraft." Bosso's feature (on muted trumpet) is a swinging take of "If I Were a Bell," while the big-toned Basso is showcased in "Oh! What It Seemed to Be," a neglected gem popular with crooners of the 1940s that isn't heard very often on a jazz date. "Candy," another oldie that has fallen out of favor, is revived in swinging fashion, with Bosso switching to flügelhorn and Basso recalling the greats of his instrument with a fine solo. Recommended.
