Album Review

Sinister may not be the most extreme practitioners of death metal, but they play it well and keep it pure, never trying to dilute the formula with melody or any other concessions to commercialism. And while frontwoman Rachel Heyzer isn't the only female death metal vocalist on the scene, her larynx-shredding bellow is one of the most formidable around (male or female). Savage or Grace, the Dutch quartet's seventh offering, is a testament to the band's unwavering intensity. Get ready for sheer, face-smashing power, or get out of the way.

Sinister got its start in 1989 when death metal was just starting to gain momentum around the world as a movement. Signing to Nuclear Blast in 1991, they would go on to release five albums between that time and 1998, when they left the label. Moving to Hammerheart Records the next year, they found a new singer in Rachel Heyzer, making them one of the only death metal bands with a female vocalist.
