Album Review

Extreme music has reached new heights during the early 21st century, as groups such as the Dillinger Escape Plan, Fantômas, and Lightning Bolt have won over both critics and fans alike. And while these groups aren't exactly being begged to clear their music for toothpaste commercials, they have cleared the way for a multitude of other similarly styled outfits, including Genghis Tron. Hailing from Poughkeepsie, New York, this three piece has traceable musical roots to the aforementioned bands, but manage to put their own spin on the extreme metal genre, as serene, electro-ambient breaks momentarily put a halt to all the sonic madness. In fact, a description from the group's press release, 'Brutal Truth and Afrika Bambaata in a club brawl with Depeche Mode' is a fitting one. Genghis Tron's debut release, the five-track Cloak of Love, flies by fast, but not before you've been pulverized with indiscernible vocals, rapid-fire riffs, and surgically precise drum beats. That said, by following the same formula throughout, it's pretty darn hard to tell the tracks apart. But that's part of the fun, isn't it?

First formed in Poughkeepsie, New York before moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Genghis Tron was a noise, electronic, IDM, grind, doom, ambient trio that got together in 2004. Their myriad of styles, which were made on-stage and on-record without the aid of bass or drummer, was hard to miss in the post-rock and post-metal world, and leading label Relapse eventually signed them up.
