Album Review

This CD (the second of three discs) continues the reissue of the Will Bradley Orchestra's most important recordings. There are four earlier numbers bypassed on the previously released Hallelujah (Hep 1061) and then 20 of the next 38 selections recorded by Bradley, mostly just skipping indifferent vocal numbers. On May 21, 1940, Bradley's big band recorded its biggest hit, the two-sided "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar." That song and other boogie-woogie numbers, including "Rock-A-Bye the Boogie," "Scrub Me Mama With a Boogie Beat," "I Boogied, When I Should Have Woogied," and "Chicken Gumboogie," along with "It's a Wonderful World," "In a Little Spanish Town," "Three Ring Ragout," and "It's Square But It Rocks," are this disc's highlights. The key soloists are trumpeter Joe Wiedman, clarinetist Joe Huffman, tenor saxophonist Peanuts Hucko, pianist Freddie Slack, and trombonist Bradley, while Ray McKinley, Carlotta Dale, Jimmy Valentine, Louise Tobin, Phyllis Myles, and Lynn Gardner have a few vocals; McKinley's are most significant. Recommended.

Nevertheless, he soon found himself closely associated with song titles like "Beat Me, Daddy, Eight to the Bar," "Scrub Me, Mama, with a Boogie Beat," "Bounce Me, Brother, with a Solid Four," and "Fry...
