Album Review

While the tradition of classical guitar is generally less well known, more obscure, and smaller in dimension than other classical traditions, the Spanish classical guitar tradition has thrived over centuries; in no small part due in the 20st century to Andrés Segovia, the master of such. As part of the lengthy, but worthwhile collection of Segovia's work released posthumously by MCA's classical department, the fifth volume of Segovia's works was released as a compilation of works by Spanish composers primarily for guitar (as opposed to the usual works for orchestras, string quartets, and the like by the German composers that Segovia was famous for transcribing to solo guitar). The recordings were made at various times in New York and Madrid between 1952 and 1968. As always, the music is beautifully performed and a pleasure to listen to. Works appear here from Milan, Narvaez, Sanz, Sor, Torroba, Granados, Espla, Cassado, Mompou, and Maria Esteban de Valera. There is little on earth that can rival the Spanish guitar, and few in the Spanish guitar tradition that can rival Segovia — this may be the best album in the series of compilations in tribute to the master. Anyone with a penchant for such music (Spanish classical, Spanish guitar, classical guitar, etc.) should definitely look into this album.

Born in Linares, Spain on February 21, 1893, Segovia began playing at the early age of four; although discouraged by his family, who felt he should adopt a "real" instrument instead, he continued...
