Album Review

On this CD, drummer Wally Schnalle declares his independence from musical categorization by utilizing electronics on some numbers. In reality, the music is mostly open-minded fusion with Jeff Massanari's rockish guitar being a key element. Schnalle's electronics add an otherworldly effect to some of the selections, and along the way one will be reminded of Miles Davis in the early '70s and hear some types of world music, sound explorations, a bit of straight-ahead jazz, and even ambient music. Perhaps the overall results of this electronic music is not "new," but the mixture of styles definitely keeps one guessing.

Drummer-bandleader Wally Schnalle has been an important force in advanced jazz of northern California since the mid-1990s. He graduated from San Jose State University, recorded early on with Francis Wong and performed with the Nova Vista and San Jose Symphonies. In 1994 Schnalle recorded his debut set as a leader (for the small Tree Fort label) and he soon formed a regularly working quintet although the drummer had been leading groups on and off since 1989.
