Album Review

The trio of pianist Billy Childs (an underrated great), bassist Buster Williams, and drummer Carl Allen digs into four standards (including "Surrey With the Fringe on Top" and "Love Dance"), two Childs songs, and three by Williams. The music is slightly unpredictable modern hard bop, played in swinging and creative fashion by three masterful players. Each of the musicians plays up to their potential, making this set a minor gem.

One of the most promising of the pianist-composers of the 1990s, Billy Childs is a superb player and an underrated writer. He toured with J.J. Johnson (with whom he made his recording debut), graduated from USC, had an important association with Freddie Hubbard (1978-1984), and led Night Flight (a group with Dianne Reeves).
