Album Review

Daddylonglegs is a duo consisting of producer Howie B (whose name you might recognize as that of the mastermind behind the recently released tribute to porn cinema entitled Suck It and See) and guitarist/synth player Jeremy Shaw, who is also a member of the band Naked Funk. Horse is an album of instrumental electro-funk with a vaguely equine theme (communicated primarily through track titles like "Giddy Up" and "Bareback," rather than through any explicit musical references). The press materials call this album "a soundtrack for reflection," and that's probably as fair an assessment of its content as the musicians could hope for. Frankly, much of this stuff is pretty dull. Every track — in particular, the deeply funky "Giddy Up" and "A Man Called Betty," with its weird vocal samples — starts off promisingly, but most of the compositions do little more than maintain the mood they established during those first few seconds, and eventually the album recedes into your subconscious as you listen. That's not necessarily bad — ambient music is perfectly respectable — and it's also not to say that when you do remember to listen closely you won't hear cool stuff going on. I'm just not sure these guys were trying for something that you have to shake yourself awake from in order to appreciate fully.
