Frei Händig, the 2012 album by German singer Stefan Gwildis, deviates from the formula of its successful predecessors in terms of material, but not in terms of sound: the vocalist still presents a collection of soul- and funk-inspired pop songs, but this time around he only includes one cover ("The Windmills of Your Mind," originally composed by Michel Legrand) — the other 12 tracks are originals written by Gwildis himself, his producers Martin Langer and Tobi Neumann, singer Pe Werner, and frequent collaborator Michy Reincke, with stylistic turns from blues with a twang guitar ("Du Bist Wieder Da") to disco ("Durch die Nacht") and an a cappella track ("Hallelujah").

German soul musician Stefan Gwildis was born in Hamburg in October of 1958. Gwildis grew up in a blue-collar neighborhood, his father a tire dealer and his mother a hat maker. Though not musicians themselves, Stefan's parents supported his musical study from an early age. In 1979 he completed his performance studies at the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg.
