Album Review

The Kelley Deal 6000s debut album, Go to the Sugar Altar, was an endearingly shambolic collection of garagey indie rock that seemed all the more appealing when the lack of new Breeders material was considered. Consequentially, the album was praised a little more than necessary, and the expectations for Deal's second album, Boom! Boom! Boom!, ran a little higher than normal in some circles. Boom! Boom! Boom! doesn't deliver any grand thrills, and it's certainly more uneven than Go to the Sugar Altar, but it has a loose, ragged charm that nearly makes up for the shockingly uneven material. In many ways, the record is like a wild, drunken live show that careens around, stopping briefly at quiet acoustic ballads and indie novelties (the tongue-in-cheek, singsong "Stripper"), before returning to trashy rock & roll. It doesn't offer anything new for Deal, nor does it offer a better set of songs than Go to the Sugar Altar — if anything, the consistency of the material has been drastically reduced — but for anyone with a weakness for amateurish indie guitar rock in the vein of the Breeders, Boom! Boom! Boom! makes for an entertaining, occasionally maddening listen.
