About Adjagas

This Norwegian duo comprises the Sámi yoikers Sara Marielle Gaup and Lawra Somby. The Sámi people comprise one of the largest ethnic groups in Europe but their traditional vocal music had declined in popularity over the course of the twentieth century, with the yoik (or joik) style most frequently surfacing when used in combination with other music forms. Gaup and Somby pursued this collaborative direction when they formed Adjágas in 2004. Both came from generations of yoiks and had been performing throughout their teenage years. Joined by additional musicians Paal Fagerheim (guitar), Juhani Silvola (guitar) and Timo Silvola (percussion), their self-titled debut album employed pop, ambient and electronica styles to provide musical backing to Gaup and Somby’s bewitching vocals. The overall effect was calming and somewhat soporific, which proved apt as the band name is a rough translation of the state between sleep and waking.
