About Chaka Demus

Hailing from West Jamaica, reggae artist and deejay Chaka Demus began his recording career in the mid 1980s. He cut a number of singles for the island’s sound system scene, and in the following years collaborated with the likes of Yellowman, Shabba Ranks, and producer Bobby Digital. Demus first worked with the singer Pliers in 1991, and the chemistry between Pliers’s smooth singing voice and Demus’ gruff toasting was a winning one. The duo cut a series of hugely popular singles including “Gal Wine,” “Tease Me,” and “Twist and Shout,” gaining a following at home and in the U.K. In the mid ‘90s the duo made inroads in America with a record deal with Island and the hugely popular single “Murder She Wrote.” Demus continued recording and performing with Pliers through the ‘90s and into the 2000s, while also maintaining a solo career.
