About Deanna Durbin

Actress and singer Deanna Durbin was one of the top box-office stars of the late-'30s and '40s. After being spotted by an MGM agent, she co-starred with Judy Garland in the musical film EVERY SUNDAY in 1936. Her performance, that same year, in THREE SMART GIRLS was rapturously received, and the two million dollars it earned saved Universal from bankruptcy. During the rest of the '30s, audiences were able to follow her evolve from a precocious teenager into a woman in a multitude of films, often cast as a singer to showoff her fluttering, honeyed voice. In 1948 she retired to total seclusion in France; she uttered not one public word in the six decades after.
