Since forming the Either/Orchestra in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1985, bandleader Russ Gershon has led this sprawling ensemble through a myriad of lineup changes and unexpected stylistic shifts. For the first decade and a half of their existence, the Either/Orchestra played adventurous large ensemble jazz that drew on the works of artists like Charlie Haden, Charles Mingus, and Sun Ra. Recent releases like LIVE IN ADDIS have seen Gershon preoccupied with approximating the thrilling, esoteric sounds of the Ethiopian jazz scene of the early ‘70s.
