A well-schooled musician in the many styles of the Antilles, Guadeloupian LaViny's career was sparked with controversy over his alleged "doudouism," perpetuating an obsequious, subservient characterization of the Antillais through his tourist-marketed albums. The politically correct outsider will wish to acknowledge the seriousness of this concern but at the same time gain a wealth of knowledge on classic traditional songs like "Ba Moin En Ti Bo," "Serpent Maigre," "Bande Zouas," and "La Ronde de Cuisinieres," all to be found on LaViny albums. ~ Gene Scaramuzzo
