About Michał Urbaniak

Michal Urbaniak is a violinist, saxophonist, composer, and bandleader based in New York City. Active since the early '60s, his pioneering jazz fusion recordings of the 1970s -- in particular Paratyphus B (1973), Inactin (1973), Super Constellation (1973), and Atma (1974) -- exposed him to international audiences. He also served as a sideman with an array of jazz legends including Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, and Larry Coryell. During the 1980s and '90s, Urbaniak (who emigrated to the U.S. in 1987) scored films and was a session musician ranging from straight-ahead jazz (My One and Only Love) to funky fusion and disco (Funk Factory). In the 21st century, he delivered Miles of Blue, the big-band fusion outing UrbSymphony, and Urbanator. In 2023, Germany's Moosicus label released Sound Pieces, compiling Paratyphus B and Inactin with previously unissued live recordings from Radio Bremen.
