About Paul Jeffrey

b. 8 April 1933, New York, USA. In the 50s Jeffrey had worked throughout the USA with R&B/blues artists including Wynonie Harris, Big Maybelle and B.B. King before returning to New York to study music at Ithaca College. Jeffrey worked with Illinois Jacquet, Sadik Hakim and Howard McGhee before touring Europe in 1968 with Dizzy Gillespie. In the 70s, after a brief spell with the Count Basie Orchestra, Jeffrey worked on and off with Thelonious Monk as well as conducting a concert of his music at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1974. Later he arranged and conducted Charles Mingus’ music on his last albums. Jeffrey has also been head of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University since the early 80s.
