About Pieter Wispelwey

It usually takes many years for artists to build up a reputation that will allow them to take liberties in where and what they perform, and even then, there are few who are willing to perform as many diverse works in one season as cellist Pieter Wispelwey does. Wispelwey's first recording of Bach Cello Suites on period instruments came in 1990. Wispelwey was allowed great freedom, not only in choosing a recording repertoire that includes mainstream works (Beethoven's sonatas), lesser-known works (Lutoslawski's concerto, Crumb's sonata), and transcriptions (Chopin waltzes and mazurkas), but also in the production process from editing to liner notes. Among his later releases was Schubert: In Memoriam (2023), a memorial for his son. By that time, his catalog comprised more than 50 albums.
