Giving watered-down pop punk a swift kick in the butt, Society's Parasites are a four-piece punk band from Southern California out to prove there's still room for a group who can fuse old-school style with hardcore fury. Haling from the rough and tumble streets of L.A.'s Echo Park neighborhood, Society's Parasites began making noises in 1997, when teenage brothers Freddy (on vocals and guitar) and Jimmy (on drums) decided to put together a band. Society's Parasites made their debut not long after, but it wasn't until 2005 that the group finally put together a strong and lasting lineup with the addition of Vince on guitar and Andy on bass and vocals. Finally firing on all cylinders, Society's Parasites cut a demo CD, and when California punk icons Rancid began inviting bands to send them recordings for play on their on-line "Rancid Radio" channel, the band sent them a copy. Rancid began airing songs from the disc, and guitarist Tim Armstrong asked Society's Parasites to open for Rancid. Impressed with their high-energy style, Armstrong invited Society's Parasites to sign to his Hellcat Records label, and the group's self-titled debut album was released in the spring of 2007. ~ Mark Deming
