CLAUDIA O'BYRNE HILL lives in southern California, where she has raised four children. She ran a family business after losing her first husband. Five years ago she started writing, and she has just completed her first novel, The River Witch, based on events from her family history. On the talk shows, Oprah and all that, I hear people talking about their childhood. Of course each one has to outdo the next, or I guess those ratings go down. It got me thinking about mine -- my childhood, that is -- which is odd, as childhood always seemed to me to be something whizzing by in a blur and the sooner forgotten the better. Then, like they do on Oprah or Donahue, I thought about the first things I could recollect. I told my mother about one memory, but she said I couldn't possibly remember it because it was when I was a toddler, maybe two and a half years old. But I do.
