This remarkable Somalian singer lays intricate vocal lines over funky grooves for a unique world-pop confection. What's more remarkable than this solo debut is the story behind her journey to freedom, fleeing Somalia and winding up in a Danish refugee camp, where she was "discovered" by an arranger who brought her to the attention of Peter Gabriel's RealWorld label. The layers of sound on this disc blend techno with a more traditional Afro-pop sound. It all makes for some of the most passionate dance music you can find.

The life story of Somalia-born and Denmark-based vocalist Maryam Mursal would be unbelievable were it not true. One of the first professional female vocalists of Muslim faith, Mursal was a star in her homeland while still in her teens. Having developed the unique blend of Islamic and African influences that she calls "Somali Jazz" in the nightclubs, Mursal was a top recording artist by the mid-'80s. With the release of her single, "Ulimada (The Professor)," in 1986, however, her whole world changed....
