One of the last bands in need of "best-of" treatment, Chapterhouse released only two studio albums, both of which were reissued around the time Sony BMG threw together The Best of Chapterhouse. (Whirlpool was expanded to 16 tracks in 2006; Blood Music was reissued in 2008, just months after this set.) If anything, a reissue of 1996's Rownderbowt, a compilation of EP tracks and demos, should have been in order. Instead, here is a 15-track overview. In all fairness, it's a budget-priced disc, and it does contain all of the shoegaze band's most notable material, with the exception of Blood Music's "Don't Look Now."

Five rail-thin longhairs from Reading, England, Chapterhouse was first linked to the space rock likes of Spacemen 3 and Loop — the connection with the former being inextricable during the band's youngest months, thanks in part to vocal support from Sonic Boom. Early on, the two bands also shared the same management and gigged together.
