The best digital handwriting on iPad. Penultimate combines distraction-free, natural handwriting and sketching with the power of Evernote’s sync and search. Take class or meeting notes, journal your thoughts, or outline your next big idea—in the office or on the go. From the first stroke, Penultimate makes the experience of pen and paper more productive.

Notes and drawings look spectacular in black or colored ink. Our inking technology produces pen strokes that look natural, and Wrist Protection prevents stray marks for writers of all grips. Choose from a number of paper styles, or import an image to create personalized paper.

We worked closely with Adonit to create the stylus we've always wanted: the Jot Script Evernote Edition, the first true precision-point stylus. Penultimate integrates tightly with the stylus and together they make digital handwriting the experience it should be. It’s like writing with your favorite pen. Available now in the Evernote Market.

Penultimate lets you work on any part of the page effortlessly. To zoom in on a location on the page, simply pinch in and start writing. With Penultimate's Drift feature enabled, the page will move along with you, automatically adjusting to the pace you are working at.

Sign in to your Evernote account in the Penultimate app to organize your Penultimate notes in notebooks, separated by topic, project, or category. Your Penultimate notes are synced to Evernote automatically, so you can find and share them across all of your devices.

No matter how you prefer to organize your work, Penultimate makes it easy to find the notes you need. Penultimate processes your notes so you can search for handwritten text in the app. Save and browse your work in notebooks and insert, delete, duplicate, and reorganize pages any way you like within them.

Penultimate is free to download and use. Pair it with Evernote Premium or Evernote Plus for bigger uploads and many other great features.

Two subscription options:

Customer Reviews

Updated review:

Updates make the app unusable. Undo does not work. Its slow, heavily focused on user interface graphics and animations rather than performance. This app is now useless. I'm sad to see how Penultimate becomes after the acquisition by Evernote.

Updated review:

I'm wondering how I can logout my Evernote account or turn off auto sync. The app now keeps syncing my artworks with Evernote and uses up all my monthly usage. It's frustrating...

My earlier review:

This is obviously a must-have iOS app, emm..., I should say, a must-have must-have! No matter in the aspects of functionality, user-interface, user experience, this app does what it claims! It even does a lot more as it encourages and promotes creativity. Artworks are easily and nicely created with Penultimate and this cannot be doubted.

In the aspect of the overall user experience, this app stands out among many note-taking apps because of the special algorithms used in the two major functions - draw and erase. I somehow draw a smoother and more natural line in Penultimate than many other apps which do not apply or apply different algorithms. I like the concept of "dots". The edges of the objects and the ends of every line are still round after each erase. The only drawback is the resolution is not quite satisfactory (in my viewpoint). With my iPad2, I can draw a clearer line with some other apps (such as neu.Notes which supports vector graphics) in a pleased speed (I assume that speed is another important criterion). I hope that there can be a powerful update that allows users to opt (vector graphics or blurred bitmap graphics), as the former is better for note-taking and the latter is more suitable for drawing/painting.

In the aspect of functionality, everything that a painter needs is included. And, they are included in a beautiful way. There is never a weird function/option. The first function that I truly need and is nicely integrated in this app is the Dropbox backup/restore function. After I backup the notebooks over the air, I can easily manage my artwork backups when using my PC, save them as my second backups one by one (as each notebook is backuped as a single file in Dropbox). So, the management of notebooks can be done efficiently. The developers are so convenient that they let users allow Penultimate to access my Dropbox account in only a single click instead of a standard account login entry which appears in most apps. Furthermore, the wrist protection feature allows both left/right-handed users to write in three different positions of their hands. Many more useful and "killer" functions such as PDF converting (open notebooks in apps that read PDF format) and page arrangement in a notebook make this app noteworthy (even if it costs the same as Pages - US$9.99). However, this app lacks a text input function as well as a zoom function which are greatly needed for note-taking. Also, the function of orienting a photo can be improved as the speed of doing it is unsatisfactory.

In the aspect of user-interface, this app provides a simple, beautiful and friendly UI. I have no complaint in its user-interface as all options are clearly displayed, nicely aligned and precisely presented (icons of the options). Please keep this up when new features are added in the future.

In the competition of the note-taking apps, Penultimate is definitely not "penultimate" (ranked second last) but one of the best apps instead. I enjoy using it and drawing with it. I appreciate all the hard work by the developers and I will be wait ing for any upcoming updates. Thanks!
