The Bariba Sound (Analog Africa No. 11)

Hailing from a market town in northeast Benin, Orchestre Super Borgou de Parakou started as a cover band only to eventually come up with their own quirky Afropop. The Bariba Sound collects unvarnished gems from the band’s ‘70s heyday: There’s the breezy, cocktail-sipping highlife of “Me Ton Le Gbe”, but also off-kilter basslines in “A Na Gan Garo Ka Nam”, topsy-turvy riffs in “Ko Guere” and the distorted organ hijinks of “Guessi-Guéré-Guess”—all anchored by drummer Bori Borro’s brisk beats.
