First and foremost, this is a horror story—roughly about a mid-19th-century couple who move into a haunted mansion where ghosts from the 18th century torment them. Sundry killings ensue. The music, though, is what makes it classic: The interplay between Andy LaRocque’s speed-demon riffs and Michael Denner’s eerie lead work (see “Arrival” and “Black Horsemen” in particular), the rhythm section’s forward charge and the abrupt switch-offs between King Diamond’s high screech and low groan are meticulously designed to give you bad dreams for weeks.
