Album Review

Though her lyric drives occasionally get in the way of the flow of the music, Les Sampou's stories are intelligent and cleverly told, and well-buoyed by the instrumental arrangements. Though Les sounds at times like a number of other musical muses — from Bonnie Raitt to Crystal Gayle — her voice and what she uses it to say are personal and individual. Musically, Sampou and her band are also quite talented and never let the music overpower the meaning.

The young, up-and-coming Les Sampou may be a relative newcomer to the international folk/blues festival circuit, but she writes songs like she's been around forever. Her record deal came about relatively easily compared to the way a lot of blues and folk singers struggle in obscurity for years before being discovered.
