Album Review

Guitarist Fareed Haque's second CD as a leader (for the short-lived Pangaea label) puts his classical-sounding acoustic guitar in poppish and funky settings, along with some more lyrical and straight-ahead sections. Other than "Ain't No Sunshine," all of the music was written by Haque and/or his sidemen, who include electric guitarist John Adair and keyboardist Jim Simon. Well-played but not overly memorable post-bop music that is open to other influences.

Fareed Haque is a flexible guitarist whose own records show off his roots in classical music along with his interest in several styles of jazz. Raised in Chicago, Haque traveled extensively as a youth with his parents, who were from Pakistan and Chile; the influence of different countries' folk music can be heard in his playing.
