In his score for The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, Ennio Morricone reimagines the West with a barrage of uncanny choirs, wacky sound effects and Spector-like walls of sound. Shocking fanfares lead to desolate moments with single instruments ringing out lonely cries. Eschewing all orchestral conventions, his legendary title theme employs an arsenal of unlikely instruments: shards of surf guitar, Indian drums, flamenco guitars, Civil War trumpets, loose castanets.
