Shinedown’s weighty 2003 debut pulses with grunge angst and chunky hard rock riffs, taking cues from the ‘90s heyday and charging them with a ‘00s radio-friendly approach. The Florida band is plenty dynamic too, with “Burning Bright” and “All I Ever Wanted” channelling Alice In Chains by matching moody, atmospheric verses with rousing stadium-ready choruses. Through it all, Brent Smith’s gravelly voice hammers home the pensive moments, while also at the ready to send notes straight for the rafters. He's at his most powerful on the dramatic closer, “45".

Melodic hard rockers Shinedown hail from Jacksonville, Florida and originally featured vocalist Brent Smith, guitarist Jasin Todd, bassist Brad Stewart, and drummer Barry Kerch. Snapped up by Atlantic Records during the early-2000s flurry of post-Creed and Nickelback signings, the group released its debut album, Leave a Whisper, in 2003.
