Sleep’s Holy Mountain is the gloriously lumbering sound of ’80s doom metal mutating into ’90s stoner rock. The album is so primordial that it’s almost impossible to determine where one DNA strain ends and the other begins. “Evil Gypsy / Solomon's Theme” and “From Beyond” are hybrids of the former’s sinister demonology and the latter’s cannabis-fuelled mysticism. And the hypnotic expanse of the title track, which features the set's furriest riff, presages the long-form psychedelia Sleep would undertake on subsequent recordings.
