Released at the end of 1980, Dirty Mind was a showcase for how Prince would revolutionise pop music: He welded New Wave to funk while challenging the status quo with his unapologetic sexuality. Even the love songs here (“When You Were Mine”, “Gotta Broken Heart Again”) have a touch of kink, while the kinky songs (“Head”, the punky incest poem “Sister”) take their taboos as seriously as heartache. It’s a blurring of the sacred and profane that would come to define his career.
