Album Review

A nice album of contemporary gypsy-influenced music, Gypsy Soul is an attempt to cover the realm of gypsy sounds and, according to the liner notes, connect it back to its roots in India. While the musical connections to India in the album sound somewhat forced, the work is rather far-reaching. Music from Spain, Romania, Hungary, Greece, Turkey, and beyond is presented, generally in the local Roma tongues. The vocalist of note here is Laura Riz, a former fashion industry personality. While one can note small inconsistencies in her voice, little breaks from her comfort zone, the style works well with gypsy music and its all-passionate, all-emotional delivery. A stable of able musicians backs up Riz, with the primary star being guitarist Zsolt Botos, transitioning smoothly from quiet acoustic ballads to flamenco rhythms to Greek dances and back again. The music is generally well performed throughout the album, and Riz' vocals propel it along ably. The gypsy sound now often takes a more electronic bent, and this album is a nice entry to the genre of modern gypsy music with a touch more traditionalism.
