Duolingo is Apple's iPhone App of the Year!

Duolingo is the world's most popular way to learn languages with over 200 million users.

23 languages to choose from. Super fun and free — Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Irish, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Turkish, Norwegian, Polish, Hebrew, Esperanto, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Welsh, Greek, Hungarian, Romanian, and Swahili. Oh, and English too.

"Far and away the best language-learning app." —The Wall Street Journal

"Duolingo may hold the secret to the future of education." —TIME Magazine

PC Magazine Editors' Choice for Language Learning: "Among iPhone apps for learning or practicing a language, you can't beat Duolingo."

"The most productive means of procrastination I’ve ever discovered. The short lesson blocks are painless and peppy, and reaching the next level (and then the level after that) becomes addictive." —Slate

Duolingo is changing the way people learn languages.

With Duolingo, you learn a language for free. You have fun while you learn, leveling up and competing with friends.

Yeah, it's pretty sweet.

With its friendly approach and awesome updates, Duolingo’s long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language. Its secret: making the process genuinely fun. Engaging mini-games test your reading, writing, and speaking skills, and joining a club (where you can encourage and compete with others) adds a great social element. Bonus: all those languages and games are available for free!

It used to be really good, now it is full of ads to make you upgrade it (although they promised it is going to be free forever...). Also, the chatting bots are completely ignoring my answers and they are giving their own automatic answers. So this function makes no sense at all. The hearts are also ridiculous, I loved it when you could lose hearts at the “test out” part, it made it a bit of a challenge, but why should I lose hearts when I am LEARNING something new? Makes no sense again. Oh, and you have to watch ads if you want to have more hearts to pratice more. Or you have to buy them (so much for free language education). Another thing that disturbs me is that there are no explanations for the rules, sometimes it feels like playing the lottery - guys, if you really want people to LEARN something, you should explain it properly! Last but not least, they should consider using real human voices, because these robot voices are still annoying.

Update

Viktor Csimma

Since I last wrote, a couple of things have changed and now I see what the whole thing is intended to be.

The hearts can be useful because if you learn too much a day but do not practice, you will forget it. I think it would be better to have a limit on daily learnt skills because the typos and accudental enters can give you a hard time, but now I can live with it. It is also good that it is possible to earn hearts by watching an ad.

The bot section is great! It really makes learning fun, but I think it does not make sense if you do not have a basic vocabulary.

Another thing is that you should make the explanation available in the mobile application (on PC it is great, and I think if you cannot access the basics, you cannot really learn a skill).

So I am sorry for my previous reaction, now it still has to be fixed at some points, but the direction is good.
