CHAPPO

About CHAPPO

Brooklyn's CHAPPO make driving, psychedelic, and post-punk-influenced indie rock. Formed by Baton Rouge native lead singer/songwriter Alex Chappo and Seattle-born keyboardist Chris Olson, the band expanded to include guitarist Dave Feddock and drummer Zac Colwell. Formed in Manhattan in 2007, CHAPPO released the EP Plastique Universe in 2010, followed by the Plastique Universe II: Pisces Princess EP a year later. In 2012, they issued their full-length debut, Moonwater, on Majordomo Records. Two more EPs, Petite Plastique and the free download Nothin' to Sell Ya (featuring covers of Beck, Jefferson Airplane, and Kenny Rogers), followed in 2013. After multiple tours that included headlining, festival appearances, and shows supporting bands such as Royal Teeth, Big Data, and Imagine Dragons, CHAPPO signed with Votiv in late 2014. Another EP, Celebrate, came out in December of that year. A freewheeling concept album involving travel through a black hole, Future Former Self arrived in the spring of 2015. In the three years before their next record, CHAPPO toured, including multiple runs with the Flaming Lips; Colwell, who had produced their first two albums, left the band; and the remaining members went on hiatus following the unrelated, untimely deaths of Chappo's good friend and Feddock's son. Deciding they wanted to continue making music together, the trio eventually regrouped and headed to San Francisco to record with John Vanderslice at his analog studio, Tiny Telephone. Sounding a little more contemplative but still trippy and buoyant, 2018's Do It was also released by Votiv. ~ Matt Collar & Marcy Donelson
